I love running

This morning, I did something wonderful… something that was both inspiring and empowering to me… something that put a smile on my face for the rest of the day…

I went running.

And then I started thinking about my past as a runner and of all the places where I have gone running so far in my life.

I think I started running when I was an Au Pair in Westchester County, New York, about 20 years ago… I started running more regularly when I lived in Manhattan. At the time, I had a small apartment close to Houston Street in the Lower East Side and I would go run in the East River Park. My route was to go south along the East River Promenade until I could see the Statue of Liberty. Those were very empowering runs!

When I moved to the Upper East Side, I would go run in Central Park or along the East River and when I moved to Park Slope in Brooklyn, I would go run in Prospekt Park.

Then there were the runs in Rhode Island or Massachusetts. More memorable were the ones in Sarasota, Florida. I would go run in this beautiful neighborhood by the water and stare at all the gorgeous houses that had their own private docks, dreaming…

There were the runs in Greenville, NC, followed by a couple of years back in New England where I figured out that colder weather had a major downside for me: it made it really challenging to run all year round…

Back in North Carolina, I started running on the American Tobacco Trail that was about a mile from my condo and that is when I also started running half-marathons. There was Kiawah Island, SC, and Alexandria, VA (twice), and those were incredible moments with incredible sceneries.

There was the run in the middle of nowhere, Romania, and the ones along the Promenade de la Plage in Cagnes-sur-Mer.

These days, I run in the Parc de Parilly in Lyon. It really is not quite as inspiring or empowering as some of the places mentioned above and I am looking forward to someday run again surrounded by beautiful sceneries on a regular basis. In the meantime, running is what keeps me sane, balanced and grounded. I was almost thinking to make it one of my New Year resolutions but then I realized that running is not something that I have to push myself to do. There have actually been times when I wondered whether I needed to cut back as I would often gladly give up my social life for a run…

Years ago, I had read that a serious runner should think about running in the same way as anyone should think about brushing their teeth. You don’t question it. You just do it. I guess that running has pretty much become like brushing my teeth to me. I pick the times when I will go running and then, I just go. It is so much easier than wondering everyday if today is going to be a good day for a run… If it is a running day, then it is a good day for a run… And only sickness or pouring rain will stop me.

Because the truth is… I love running!
